A Weekend Trip Takes a Spiritual Turn
I went away for a weekend with several girlfriends. Some of them actively worship at a church. Most don't, except for infant baptisms, first communions, Easter, and Christmas. There's one woman in particular for whom I've been praying who has been disenchanted with her denomination. I've always been very open about my faith with these women, and they ask questions from time to time, but I never want to appear to be "pushing religion." I had hoped, with Gospel 5000 in mind, to be more intentional about speaking clearly about the Gospel during this trip.
God gave me an opportunity by working it out so that this one friend rode in the car with me on the way home for the hour-plus trip. We talked about parenting and what we teach our kids about faith and God, and very specifically began speaking about the doctrine of her church and the concept of salvation. I was able to speak to her about the difference between saying Jesus is the Son of God who died on a cross, and believing that Jesus' own sinlessness and sacrifice pays the price for our sins, for which we could never do enough good works to cover or become holy enough to erase. I also spoke about my own realization that I fell so far short of the glory of God and needed Jesus to redeem me and direct my life, not just influence it. In sharing the Gospel, I focused on grace over works, which seems to be the biggest stumbling block in her view of salvation.
I believe it's a seed planted, and she has said since then that she really enjoyed our talk and always finds our chats thought-provoking. So, I continue to pray, even as I thank God for what He is already doing in her spirit.
