Building a Relationship with Someone Who Needs Christ

I've come to enjoy one of the clerks in a local establishment over the last few years. Each time I go in, we chat a few more sentences while I'm at the counter. One day recently she slid her hand across the counter toward me and said, "Look! I'm engaged!" as she showed me her new diamond ring. She's around 40 and has never been married.

I said, "This calls for a celebration! Could I take you out to lunch some time?"

I didn't think she'd say yes, as we hardly knew each other, but she responded immediately with, "Thursdays are slow days, and it would work out well then!"

I invited her for the next Thursday, and we agreed on Baker's Square. As our food was delivered, I asked her if she'd mind if I prayed a blessing over the meal. She said she'd like that, so I did. I also prayed for her and her fiancé and the marriage to come in 2009. She had tears in her eyes after my simple prayer, saying no one had ever prayed for her like that.

As we chatted through lunch, I learned more about her, and she offered that she was Jewish. She also said she goes to temple once in a while and fasts on Yom Kippur because she is aware of her sins and wants them to be forgiven. We talked at length about that and how sins get forgiven, although I didn't bring up Jesus just yet. Our references were to "the Lord" or "God." It was interesting that we got onto religious topics repeatedly while we ate. I think it was because I'd prayed. I guess she felt I would be interested after that, which I was.

We're continuing our "over the counter" conversation whenever I go in, but we haven't had another chance to talk at length. I'm praying for another opportunity and for her. We're just becoming friends in the most natural way, that's all, and faith issues will continue to come up. I'll know when the time is right to share about Christ as the only way to God.
